West Point, Nebraska: The Heart of Midwest America

West Point is a glimpse of what the true Midwest America is all about. If you are cynical after living in the city that America has changed for the worst, just visit West Point and your faith in American values will be restored.

West Point is the heart of America.  This is where you can see beautiful fields of corn and soybeans move like ocean waves in the cool breeze.  It is such iconic Americana with the red barns and livestock.  The noise you hear are the goats and the roosters, not the cars racing down the street.  This is home to the Nebraska values and is refreshing in a way that takes you back in time when people wave as they pass by and they are friendly and polite.  You can see the respect they have for each other which has disappeared from the big cities long ago.  Neighbors helping each other and looking out for each other, this place will help to restore your family values.

West Point is a town with just over 3,000 population, there are more cattle than people, with over 300,00 cattle per year!  Even though this is a small town in middle America, it has some surprising gems to discover.  Here are the top things to do in West Point:

This is a 120 acre park and a great place to walk or have a picnic.  In the winter there is a hill at the south entrance for sledding. The park is on the east end of West Point and is a natural preserve.  We have seen beautiful wild flowers, bunnies and deer on our many walks around the park.  This is one of my favorite places to go in West Point.

At 118 E. Grove Street in West Point, you will find one of the most amazing stores!  The mercantile has fine quality home goods that are locally made.  This is a one of a kind store and is a great place to support your local small business. It's like walking into a cute boutique in Paris! Make sure you go in the fall and winter for the incredible products to make your home cozy for the holidays, or during the spring and summer to brighten up your space. You can order online too:

This is a family run Ice Cream Shop and farm store that is located at 122 E. Park Street.  The ice cream is fantastic and they sell meat and other local sourced products such as honey.  Check out the Ice Cream truck for special events such as weddings and birthdays!

The restaurant is located at 135 S. Main Street, right off the highway, in a building that is 100 years old.  Once in this restaurant you would think you were in a trendy place in the city.  They have wonderful burgers and feature a unique burger of the week.  This is a very popular place so make sure you get there early to get a table.

The Farm is located in Oakland, NE.  It is popular in the fall when they host a large pumpkin patch and corn maze.  The location can also be booked for weddings in the amazing barn. They also have special events and are available for field trips.

A piece of my heart will always remain in West Point and the surrounding Towns such as Norfolk, in the Nebraska heartland. West Point is a glimpse into the true Midwest American culture. Go Huskers!
